Buy the Rounds (lyrics)

Take the blood money out of every house
You had told me once, I’ll tell you now
“It could be worse, steady hours, how’s the mouth
into which you walked as I walked out?”
Everyone distant eyes and distant hearts
Talking to the walls, talking too loud
With words sweet as sugar they’ve taken all the good ones
They know the rules but they don’t see how anyone could lie

Take the rooftops, tell everyone to hide
In the backs of cars, they ain’t on strike
Give the barkeep enough to satirize
Like everyone who told you not to cry
Test the water in ships you’ll run aground
As in search of friends you buy the rounds
A dim light
And in search of friends you buy the rounds

Tips and wages
I’ve nowhere to go if I tell you who did it
No one knows and no one should
No one ever could have known

Comb the seashore and so refine the words
Save your sorry stories for the birds
